Bike unveiled at the Soaring Eagle

The founder of the television show “OCC Choppers,” Paul Teutul Sr., unveiled a custom motorcycle designed exclusively for the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe Saturday at the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort, 6800 Soaring Eagle Blvd.

The chopper is going to be a showpiece displayed at the Soaring Eagle through August, said Mike Dini, advertising and public relations manager for the casino.

Track staff announced; Kaczor retained

The track and field and cross country staff has been announced with the possibility of more hires to come.

Willie Randolph, the director of men's and women's track and field/cross country, confirmed the hires of Matt Kaczor as distance/middle distance coach and Jeff Petersmeyer as jumps/multi-events coach and recruiting coordinator.

City Fluoride Task Force looking for research experts

Mount Pleasant's Fluoride Task Force is looking for experts to provide information and recommendations in fluoride research.

The committee, created in January, has four members researching the effects of fluoridation in water supplies and aid the city's commission on decisions regarding water fluoridation.

Central Michigan football fans will soon have a new place to buy all their merchandise inside Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

The Chippewas Varsity Shop will be located in the Northwest corner of the stadium where fans will be able to purchase all the gear they need.

South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford wrote a column Sunday in the State, a newspaper based around Columbia. In it, Sanford apologized to the people of South Carolina, asking for forgiveness and thanked people for his support.

Big name celebs coming this fall will cost $63,000

Zach Galifianakis' paycheck from Central Michigan University will be $40,000 for his show scheduled for 8 p.m. Oct. 16 at Finch Fieldhouse.

The “Hangover” actor won't be the only big name getting a big paycheck from CMU, however.

For CMU's Program Board, that's just the beginning.

From flannel to greased pigs: Farwell Lumberjack Festival offers fun for all ages

The ninth annual Farwell Lumberjack Festival is all about seeing children enjoy themselves.

The festival, which was on hiatus during the 1980s and 1990s, was restarted in 2000, said Lumberjack Festival Committee Member Janice Jenkins.

“We wanted to make sure that it was a an environment that kids had something to do for the weekend with plenty of entertainment for adults,” she said.

Financial aid increase a different step for CMU

The Board of Trustees' decision to increase financial aid Thursday by more than $640,000 was something the Board had not done in year's past.

But the effects will benefit students needing extra funding to go along with the recent tuition hike.

“I think our Board action was really responsive to saying 'look at the burden on our students and the students who are committed to being here.

Lil' Chef reopens smoke-free

Lil' Chef reopened its doors to a new and smoke-free environment Monday after being closed for interior renovation since July 5.

The 24-hour family restaurant, located at 1720 S. Mission St., now features a completely renovated dining room with new seating, new tile flooring instead of carpeting and new paint instead of wallpaper.

Local five-day festival features riverside music

The music scene in Mount Pleasant will be filled to the brim this week with a festival and rockin' river.

Midwest Fest started its second year of bringing talented bands from all over to Mount Pleasant, while WMHW 91.5 is hosting “91.5 Rocks the River.”

The Board approved the emeritus rank for the following employees: Police Chief Stanley Dinius, Director of the Beaver Island Biological Station and biology professor James Gillingham, associate professor of art Sharon Lee House, former General Counsel Eileen Jennings and assistant professor of economics Basil Zimmer.

A no show

Board of Trustees Chairwoman Gail Torreano recently accepted a position with AT&T as senior vice president, which moved her to Dallas. While the accomplishments of all our Trustees should be positive for Central Michigan University, the most recent one by Torreano may leave CMU suffering.

Yellow Ribbon Program gives financial aid to soldiers

A new program in the Post 9/11 GI Bill will give increased financial aid to 200 to 300 Central Michigan University students in off-campus and online programs.

The Yellow Ribbon Program will guarantee to pay a tuition rate for veterans that is equal to the highest public institution in the state, said Brian Bell, associate director of financial operations for Off-Campus and Online Programs.
