Hokies still on 2010 schedule

Contrary to a report from a local newscast in Richmond, Va., the football team will still open its 2010 schedule on the road against Virginia Tech.

WTVR-6 out of Richmond reported on July 21 that Virginia Tech was shuffling its schedule after Syracuse asked out of its contract to play games in 2010 and 2011.

For high school students, band camp creates many memories.

One that always sticks in Carman-Ainsworth senior Joseph Summers mind is one involving a girl losing a few strands of hair practicing their march.

“Three years ago, one of the mellophones was walking across and a trombone was marching the other way and her (the mellophone player's) hair got caught in the trombone slide and she was pulling on it.

Township names manager candidate

The Union Township Board of Trustees unanimously voted Brian A. Smith as their top candidate for the position of township manager at their regular meeting Wednesday evening.

“I think Mr. Smith is a very impressive candidate,” said Trustee John Dinse at the meeting.

Lake Ann senior Cherise Riley works on a chalking of a cat looking through a fishbowl Saturday afternoon at the Mount Pleasant Street Festival. Riley said it was her first time participating in the festival and she had spend five hours working on the chalking and planned on working another two or three to finish it.

City police search for two suspects in money swindling

Mount Pleasant Police are looking for two men who are suspected to have stolen more than $350 from five local businesses on South Mission Street in a series of quick-change scams this weekend.

Police arrest local man in connection with Warriner Hall burglaries

A 52-year-old Mount Pleasant man has been arrested in connection with a string of burglaries at Warriner Hall.

Donald Lee Morrison was charged with one felony count of conducting a criminal enterprise, two felony counts of breaking and entering and three felony counts of larceny in a building.

Local artist to make tree in front of Sloan Hall "sing"

Thousands of jingle bells will adorn a big tree outside Sloan Hall for a month as part of a local artist's display.

Mount Pleasant resident and Central Michigan University alumna Ingrid Tourangeau is presenting “Tree Song,” a tribute to Gordon Matta-Clark's piece, “Tree Dance.

CMU Police impound 82 bicycles on campus

Central Michigan University Police have impounded 82 bicycles and tagged 250 more this month in an effort to crack down on bicycle theft.

CMU Police Department Service Officer Mike Anderson said most of the bikes that are picked up are abandoned or have several things wrong with them.

Mount Pleasant Police are currently searching for a 31-year-old Mount Pleasant male responsible for assault and battery Sunday outside the Bird Bar & Grill.

MPPD Information Officer Dave Sabuda said it started with an exchange of words inside the 223 S. Main St.

Trail to be renamed to honor resident

The City Commission chamber was packed for Monday evening's meeting for renaming of the city's River Walk Trail.

As decided at the commission's meeting on July 13, the River Walk Trail will be renamed the Gregory K. Baderschneider River Walk Trail.

Baderschneider, who died in October 2008, spent almost 30 years working for the city's parks.

MAINstage opener announced

Eric Hutchinson will have some company during MAINstage 2009 as Program Board and On The Fly productions announced Ryan Star will be opening.

Star, who was a contestant on CBS's reality show “Rock Star: Supernova,” and has his first album coming out since the show titled “11:59″ will be coming out sometime this year and his EP for the CD titled “Last Train Home EP” has recently gained some fame.

Community colleges lobby to offer four-year degrees

Some community colleges may begin offering bachelors degrees.

State Rep. John Walsh, R-Livonia, has sponsored a bill that would allow community colleges to offer four-year degrees in culinary arts, concrete technology and nursing.

“We hope to have a hearing in the fall,” said Michael Hansen, president of the 28-member Michigan Community College Association.

Mid-Michigan counties consider smoking ban

The possibility of a statewide smoking ban has been a hot topic of debate in Lansing for quite some time, but after a recent ruling, some individual counties are now holding their own discussions regarding the matter.

In a unanimous decision, the Michigan Supreme Court has ruled that counties can now make stricter smoking laws than the state government.

Alum writes book talking to strangers

Brandon Doman's result? “Don't Talk to Strangers,” a book of journal entries collected from people on the streets of Ann Arbor over a five-day period.
