Tips on keeping cool this summer

Those who don't have air conditioning this scorching summer need not fear, there are plenty of ways to stay cool during the summer in Mount Pleasant.

Tubing down the Chippewa River is one way residents can enjoy the summer heat. Mike Anderson, manager of Chippewa River Outfitters, said the company offers single tubes for $11 and double tubes for $20.

EDITORIAL | Use new EHS Building

With classes beginning Monday in the new Education and Human Services Building, it is finally being used for the purpose it was designed for: serving students. Now that it is fully operational, students and faculty on campus should strive to make using the building a priority, especially this fall.

Library showcases battle of the bands

A battle of the bands Saturday at the Chippewa River District Library, 301 South University St., allowed area middle and high school students to showcase their ability to rock.

The library's Summer Reading Program's Battle of the Bands had two finalists performed: Shock and Strength in Numbers.

DRESDEN | A tough time

To say that I'm nervous about the future here at Central Michigan University is an understatement.

Going into my sophomore year here, I have already experienced an almost unnatural amount of changes at this university. From University President Michael Rao's departure, to the ending of the CMU Promise, to the decision that there would be a new medical school, I would say last year had a ridiculous amount of change for a student just trying to get settled in.

Tournament first major event at new county disc golf course

Jordan Bruursema has been waiting for this week for two years.

After developing the new disc golf course at Deerfield County Park, located at 2425 W. Remus Road, the Zeeland graduate student's project will see its first tournament this weekend,: the J-Bird Players Series Disc Golf Tournament.

CMU's quarterback has created quite the legacy during his stay in Mount Pleasant.

It was first created on August 31, 2006. In the season opener against Boston College of the Atlantic Coast Conference - a Bowl Championship Series opponent - sophomore quarterback Brian Brunner went down to injury three plays into the game.

Proposed cut could affect thousands of CMU students

Proposed cuts to the Michigan state budget could leave incoming Central Michigan University freshmen without $4,000 for their education.

“At this point in time, it's not a question anyone can answer,” said Diane Fleming, associate director of Client Services in the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.

EHS Building opens doors for its first class Monday

On Monday, students will walk into the new Education and Human Services Building for the first time to attend classes.

The four-story 137,000- square foot building houses Central Michigan University's College of Education and Human Services program, which was previously in Ronan Hall.

Transition in university leadership takes place next Wednesday

University President Michael Rao has one week until he assumes the presidency at Virgina Commonwealth University and will finish his tenure as president of Central Michigan University.

Dean of Students Bruce Roscoe said since Rao announced his resignation February 20 to leave for VCU, Rao has maintained his relationship with students and faculty and continued to work diligently until June 30.

CD REVIEW | The Higher's new album misses aim

A few years ago, the band released “On Fire,” a blend of rock and pop that was able to grab a hold of rock fans despite its heavy, cheesy pop elements.

Grace Church to move to old Embers building

The Grace Church will be bringing its services to a brand new location.

Last Monday, the church, currently at 218 S. Main St., purchased the location of the old Embers Restaurant at 1217 S. Mission St. for $750,000.

“We've been interested in this building since the fall of 2007,” said Grace Church Pastor Barry Flanders.

Eric Hutchinson headlining MAINstage

A more “chill” feeling is in store for MAINstage this year with Eric Hutchinson headlining the event.
On the Fly Productions President Justin Wheeler said the choice for the August 23 show was Hutchinson because they felt he would bring a more laid back atmosphere which can be needed with the craziness that goes on during Welcome Week.

Excitement splashes into Bay City this weekend

Anyone looking for world- class power boat racing need and 1980s rock music can look no further than Bay City this weekend.

The 22nd annual Dow Bay City River Roar is taking place in the heart of the city on the Saginaw River Friday through Sunday, and will include thousands with F1 ChampBoat racing and music.
