Health officials stress awareness as swine flu hits Isabella County

With Isabella County's first case of the H1N1 flu found last week, health officials are laying off on official testing and taking more precautions against the nationwide pandemic.

Dr. Robert Graham, medical director for the Central Michigan District Health Department, said since the case of swine flu had been detected in Isabella County, laboratory testing for the disease has decreased.

Associate dean of libraries leaving for new position

Anne Casey is on the move.

After serving the Central Michigan University libraries for nearly 18 years and setting the bar for librarians across campus, Casey, the associate dean of libraries, is packing her bags for Florida.

“She's the best boss I've ever had,” said Michael Lorenzen, head of Reference Services.

Provost's departure leaves another hole at top

The announcement of Provost Julia Wallace's departure last week leaves four of the top five administrative positions at Central Michigan University vacant or filled by interims.

Wallace accepted the provost and vice chancellor of Academic Affairs position at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay May 19, said Mike Heine, the news and media release coordinator at UW-Green Bay.

Therrell is new FaCIT director

James Therrell was named director for Central Michigan University's Faculty Center for Innovative Teaching Friday.

Therrell, who begins his new position July 15, comes from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, Okla., where he was a faculty member and leader of faculty development since 2004.

Mount Pleasant's detour

Broomfield, Crawford

The Isabella Corporation is currently undergoing construction on expanding the intersection on Broomfield and Crawford Roads.

Academic orientation for freshmen starts today

Central Michigan University will see a big influx of people in the coming weeks.

Approximately 3,700 new freshmen and their families will visit campus on 11 different days for Academic Orientation.

Michelle Howard, assistant director of academic advising and assistance, said the number of new students has remained constant from last year.

Spray park is staying downtown

After city-wide debate, a new spray park in Mount Pleasant will be built in Island Park, as decided at Tuesday's city commission meeting.

Issues with the water lines were a large reason behind the decision.

Island Park, 331 N. Main St., has a six-inch water main that the city may utilize for the park's water supply, said Chris Bundy, the director of the Mount Pleasant Parks and Recreation department.

Summer enrollment stays same, students can keep graduation timetable

With a few exceptions, summer enrollment at Central Michigan University has stayed stable over the past few years.

Registrar Karen Hutslar said summer enrollment rates have stayed similar in recent years.

In 2005, 3,266 students applied for first semester summer classes, Hutslar said, and 3,400 applied for first semester summer classes in 2008.

Special Olympians taking over campus this weekend

Melissa Lackie gave a big smile when talking about competing in the State Summer Games for the Special Olympics Tuesday.

Students shrug off higher gas prices

Although gas prices in Michigan are slowly climbing, many Central Michigan University students don't seem to be to concerned.

According to a report from AAA of Michigan, gas prices are 20 cents higher than they were last week.

The statewide average price for a gallon of regular is $2.

Phase II of botanical gardens to include more plantings, pond

The botanical gardens project will be requesting bids from contractors for phase II in the next few weeks.
The gardens, which have been in planning and development since May 2006, lie near the Wakelin McNeel woodlot next to the Park Library and feature plants native to Michigan.

Some residents, students push for anti-discrimination ordinance

Some area residents and Central Michigan University students students are demanding change.

Some members of the community are rallying for a city-wide non-discrimination ordinance to be approved in Mount Pleasant.

Petitions were signed and delivered to the Mount Pleasant City Commission in April, along with a request for the commission to review their information.

LIFE IN BRIEF | Monica Rao receives job at VCU

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported earlier this month that in a closed session meeting, the VCU Board of Visitors approved the hiring of new VCU's president Michael Rao's wife. Monica Rao will work 20 hours a week as VCU's international alumni relations liaison at a $34,000 salary.

EHS Building offering more than just classes, studying

The new Education and Human Services Building is being considered a big upgrade from Ronan Hall by some.

One of the biggest improvements is that of technology, said Ray Francis, interim associate dean of the College of Education and Human Services.

The building has a great capacity for wireless Internet connections for students and provides some great opportunities for faculty to work with technology, Francis said.

Sotomayor nominated by Obama for next Supreme Court justice

President Barack Obama named potentially the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice in the nation's history Tuesday morning.

Following approval from Congress, U.S. Court Judge Sonia Sotomayor will be the next Justice on the court, replacing Supreme Court Justice David Souter, who will be retiring.
