The baseball team travels to the University of North Carolina-Asheville today to take on its first opponent since starting the season 2-2.

The team will have a four-game series against UNC-Ashville beginning at 2 p.m.

“Every game is an opportunity to get better,” said coach Steve Jaksa.

Bob Saget cancels April Rose Arena show

Bob Saget may never play to a full house in Rose Arena.

According to Robert Ebner, director of university events, the comedian most famous for his role as Danny Tanner in ABC's “Full House” will no longer perform at Central Michigan University in April.

Saget's agent, Heidi Feigin, sent an e-mail announcing the cancellation of Saget's scheduled April 25 show yesterday afternoon to both Ebner and Damon Brown, Coordinator of Student Activities.

It's one of the most thankless jobs in the world, full of verbal abuse from coaches, players and fans.

They are blamed by losing teams for their failures.

The stripes they wear make them a target, and the pressure they face is immense, especially in crucial games.

Bars shrug at 4 a.m. proposal

A budget proposal by Gov. Jennifer Granholm would allow bars in Michigan to serve alcohol until 4 a.m. and before noon on Sundays.

But the proposal was not exactly met with enthusiasm by some local bar owners, who say extra hours would mean increased liability costs.

Tobacco tax climbs to $1 in April

Virginia Adams has been smoking for about five years, but the McBain junior said recent federal legislation may provide the motivation she needs to quit.

Beginning April 1, the per-pack federal excise tax on manufactured cigarettes will rise to $1 from 39 cents, raising retail cigarette prices about 20 percent nationwide.

Every Division I athlete takes a different route.

For sophomore gymnast Andrea de la Garza, it was cross-continental, as she lived in three different countries in a nine-year span.

Born in Mexico City, Mexico, de la Garza spent the first six and one-half years living in the country within an hour outside of the Mexican capital in Toluca, Mexico.

Clarke archivist says history is far from a done deal

Children begin learning about the past as early as kindergarten, he said. They memorize dates and names of important people who impacted the world.

The women's basketball team travels to Northern Illinois for a 5 p.m. Saturday game to continue its quest for the second West Division bye in the Mid-American Conference Tournament.

CMU ranks fourth in the MAC West Division, with NIU one game ahead.

Knapp: Men's track championships for the seniors

For the men's track team, last week's Jack Skoog Open was for their coach.

But competing at this weekend's Mid-American Conference Championship, that's for their seniors.

The meet begins at 10 a.m. today and continues Saturday, hosted by Kent State.

Today, the team will try to help them end their careers on a good note, something head coach Jim Knapp has stressed at the beginning of each season.

Author imparts film industry wisdom, advice to students

That was the overall message of novelist and screenwriter Scott Phillip during a presentation on his knowledge and experience working in the film industry Thursday night in Moore Hall.

“Write a movie you would want to sit through and write a book you would want to read,” he told the audience after he was asked to give advice to beginning screen writers.

To my surprise, my new school was inundated with teachers who hailed from Flint, Saginaw and Alpena.

There were so many Michiganders at Lloyd C. Bird High School that our fight song was “Hail to the Victors.

More fake bills show up locally

Four $10 counterfeit bills have been passed this week at different businesses in Mount Pleasant.

Mount Pleasant Police Department Information Officer Dave Sabuda said fraudulent money was passed at the 7-Eleven, 2397 S. Mission St., McDonald's, 1804 S. Mission St.
