Students should take initiative

I am writing this article in response to Kevin Schloemp's Sept. 26 article “Cultural Pride.”

As the assistant director of Minority Student Services, I assist with developing and coordinating our cultural month celebrations.

Although we are co-sponsoring parts of Hip Hop Week, this is a week largely coordinated by a registered student organization with some help from On The Fly Productions.

High school students explore campus, majors at CMU and You Day

Prospective student James McGlynn committed to attending CMU after attending CMU and You Day.

“I was kind of thinking of coming (to CMU), but now I really want to,” McGlynn said Saturday at the event.

The Romulus High School senior said he found the university overview presentation to be most helpful.

Saginaw site a possibility for medical complex

Partnerships for Central Michigan University's medical school plan is now under consideration with mid-Michigan health facilities, involving clinical affiliations that could exist in Saginaw in a matter of years.

Vacant land off the Saginaw River westbank was purchased in August by Michigan Healthpark Development for construction of a medical research complex, which Project Director Jeffrey Schell said offers a good possibility of a Saginaw-based partnership with CMU.

Sorority recruitment finishes with a record number of bids

With a record number of women, formal sorority recruitment was the best it's been in years, said Panhellenic Council President Sara Seckel.

“I've been here for a while and it's been the smoothest recruitment,” the Troy senior said. “It's been really fun … We haven't had to worry about drama.

Bush administration proposes rule affecting women's rights

Women patients might be denied access to some health care in the United States.

Last month, the Bush administration proposed a rule from the Department of Health and Human Services that would govern family planning.

Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, said this proposed rule could allow individual health care providers to redefine abortion to include the most common forms of birth control.

Stephanie Martin and senior midfielder Erica Rohren scored twice and sophomore goalkeeper Shay Mannino posted consecutive shutouts as the women's soccer team won a pair of conference games.

Volleyball wins first two conference games on road

The volleyball team bounced back from a five-match losing streak by dominating its first two Mid-American Conference foes on the road during the weekend.

CMU defeated Toledo in three sets and beat Ball State 3-1.

“I am extremely pleased and proud of the team,” said coach Erik Olson.

Scholarships help ROTC increase enrollment to 145

The ROTC program at Central Michigan University has increased enrollment in the past few years.

Lt. Col. Aaron Kalloch, chair of the military science department, said cadet enrollment in the program has increased by six to 10 percent every year since 2005, and this year enrollment is at 145 cadets.

A few inches to the left and CMU could have entered its bye week 2-3 instead of 3-2 overall. It was yet another close Mid-American Conference game, and again, Central barely won, this time on a 46-yard field goal attempt by Buffalo's A.

Students, residents attend Mardi Gras

Ball State continues to dominate

Ball State answered any questions about how it might compete after losing standout wide receiver Dante Love by dominating Kent State (1-4 overall, 0-1 MAC). Love also was honored by the players, who wore a red shirt with Love's No.
