No charges filed after noose investigation

Isabella County Prosecutor Larry Burdick has decided not to press charges of ethnic intimidation relative to the hanging of four nooses in a Central Michigan University classroom last November.

A 28-year-old male engineering student was thoroughly questioned and a formal investigation was conducted to determine whether the act was racially-motivated.

Botanical Gardens

More than 400 plant species will come together starting in September as the construction for Central Michigan University's own botanical gardens gets underway.

CMU trustee emeritus James Fabiano Sr. approached CMU's biology department about two years ago and said he wanted to make a starting contribution for the startup of a botanical garden.

CMU home to exotic plants, flowers

Central Michigan University's greenhouse is the only place on campus and maybe even the world that an agave cactus, setcreasea, ponytail palm and papyrus plant can coexist.

The greenhouse's six biomes, or climate controlled rooms, and conservatory act as a hands-on classroom for biology, ecology and geology students.

Grant to advance research, internship opportunities

Students studying entrepreneurial business and apparel merchandising and design will have new opportunities this fall.

Central Michigan University has been awarded a $72,000 grant from the Michigan Initiative for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

The grant was given as part of a competition between Michigan's 15 public universities.

LeFevour dominates Comerica Park on entrance billboard

\It may not be Times Square, but Athletics Director Dave Heeke has placed another star quarterback in quite the prominent location.

A 30-by-60 foot billboard of junior Dan LeFevour is featured on the back of Comerica Park's scoreboard near the main entrance to Ford Field, where incoming Tigers and Lions fans can gaze upon the 2007 Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year.

Classes to incorporate city trail

Lynn Dominguez's students can look forward to being outdoors in the fall.

The assistant professor for Recreation, Parks and Leisure Services said she is incorporating the development of the Access Adventure Trail into two of her classes.

The Central Michigan University Board of Trustees approved a temporary easement on July 17 for the city of Mount Pleasant to complete construction on the trail into university-owned Veits Woods.

Center for Charter Schools receives 18 applications to fill vacancy

Mount Pleasant Bennigan's will not be affected by corporate bankruptcy claim

Despite country-wide closures after its corporate parent filed for bankruptcy suddenly on Tuesday, Mount Pleasant's Bennigan's Grill & Tavern won't be affected - at least for the short term.

Metromedia Restaurant Group, owner of Bennigan's and Steak & Ale Restaurant, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection in the Eastern District of Texas.

$2OO million needed to fix campus problems

It would take about $200 million to cover Central Michigan University's known maintenance needs.

Many of the maintenance projects that need to be completed continue to get backed up as more continue to be added.

Associate Vice President of Facilities Management Stephen Lawrence said there is no itemized list with every single item, but projects are prioritized to efficiently distribute their yearly maintenance budget.

$2.1 million set aside for events center planning and design

More than $4 million has been raised for Central Michigan University's renovation of Rose Arena into a university-wide events center.

The CMU Board of Trustees approved a proposal on July 17 that reserved $2.1 million for the planning and design phase. More than $1 million comes from the university and the other $1 million comes from the $4 million already raised.

Competition draws thousands to Island Park

Academic integrity left up to students for online classes

Adjunct Accounting Professor Donald Case believes students who cheat on online classes are only cheating themselves.

“I think most of the students at Central have integrity and don't cheat, but the ones who do are going to pay for it,” he said. “They're only hurting themselves, if you don't know the subject you won't know the job, so when you fail you only have yourself to blame.
