Scandal, turmoil lead Tropf to right fit at Central

Like each of the newest inductees into Central Michigan University's Athletics Hall of Fame, Jeff Tropf considers his induction as one of the highest honors he has received in sports.

But unlike the other inductees, it took him three schools and a national scandal to get there.

Credit card payments will require transaction fee starting July 1

Starting July 1, Central Michigan University will be charging a convenience fee for students who pay tuition with credit cards.

The 2.75 percent fee was created to cover the costs of transaction processing.

“The university can no longer afford to pay the fee,” said Cynthia Rubingh, director of receivable accounting and loans.

Sports camps see sharp dip in attendance

Central Michigan University's summer sports camps are undergoing an overhaul.

CMU Athletics is in the process of reinventing its 40 camps, which have seen a sharp decrease in enrollment in just two years.

“Kids today are busy - they have a lot of different things going on in their lives,” said Derek van der Merwe, senior associate athletic director.

Allegations loom over election

The Isabella County Sheriff's Department's primary election is almost a month away and the two candidates are vehemently vying for the elected position.

And both incumbent Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski and Deputy Kevin E. Dush are not shying away from a dispute as the election nears.

City denies request to alter plan

A developer who proposed a change of plans for the land near the Borden Building was unanimously denied by the Mount Pleasant City Commission.

A single-story State of Michigan Department of Human Services building was proposed by Central Michigan Developers, LLC Monday.

Canoeing at night launched

Buckley's Mountainside Canoes wants to give its customers something new this summer.

Buckley's, 4700 West Remus Road, launched the “Moon River Paddle.” Canoeists and kayakers float down the Chippewa River in the light of a full moon using only headlights and glow sticks to help guide the way.

“I've always been good at drawing,” said the Big Rapids High School freshman, who wants to sketch outfits.

July 1 wage increase to affect campus jobs, programs

Central Michigan University is preparing for the July 1 minimum wage increase.

But that doesn't mean it is fond of the third change in 18 months, which increases the current wage of $7.15 per hour to $7.40.

The university is set to spend an estimated $128,000 per semester to pay minimum wage employees, said Director of Media Relations Steve Smith.

The 12-person University Theatre Acting Troupe starts performing tonight.

Three productions will be performed by a portion of the troupe on a rotating basis.

Communication and Dramatic Arts professor Steven Berglund, director of “The Complete Works Of William Shakespeare (Abridged),” said rotating and touring with one cast and crew for three different shows can be difficult but is an important part of the cast's education.

Military scholarship available for off-campus programs

General Dynamics Land Systems has created a scholarship for active duty military students and their immediate family members enrolled in Central Michigan University's off-campus programs.

The Sterling Heights based company that designs and manufactures land and amphibious combat systems for the U.
