Animal shelter expects influx of abandoned pets at semester end

Campus may soon slow to the easygoing pace of summer, but life at the Isabella County Animal Control will become busier than ever.

“We always experience an influx of animals this time of year,” said Annette Thompson, secretary at the shelter, 1105 S. Isabella Road.

Seven laptops stolen from residence halls

Seven laptops were stolen from two residence halls, CMU Police said on Sunday.

Six laptop computers and an iPod were stolen from Cobb Hall between 6 and 8 a.m. Saturday, said Mike Skonieczny, Cobb Hall residence hall director.

A laptop computer and backpack were stolen from Merrill Hall between 6:30 and 8 p.

Central summer camps provide opportunities for leadership, fun

High school students across Michigan will have the chance this summer to test their leadership skills.

The Academy High School Leadership Camp, organized by the Leadership Institute, is one of many summer camps hosted on campus in 2008.

While each camp will serve a specific purpose and age, The Academy is geared toward learning and teambuilding.

OneRepublic no show for Gentle Friday

More than 3,500 CMU students showed up Friday evening at Kelly/Shorts Stadium to see OneRepublic but because lead singer Ryan Tedder injured his ankle, the band did not perform.

After the Crocs Next Step Campus Tour crew had finished setting the stage for OneRepublic, a crew member announced Tedder had been taken to the hospital for an emergency surgery and the concert was over.

Retiring faculty members reflect on careers

Retirement seems bittersweet for nostalgic faculty members preparing to leave campus in May.

English language and literature professor Eric Torgersen and geography professor Wayne Kiefer will be among two dozen employees packing up their offices.

Torgersen first came to campus from Quincy University of Illinois in 1970.

Mental illnesses often go undiagnosed

Roughly one in four American adults per year suffers from some diagnosable mental disorder.

However, this statistic, provided by the National Institute of Mental Health, may not capture the bulk of undiagnosed cases.

Ross Rapaport, director of the Counseling Center, said numerous adults - for reasons varying from fears of being stigmatized to considering treatment as a sign of weakness - hesitate to seek help, even though it would improve their well-being.

“The Quinceanera is like a 'Sweet 15' in Mexico and Brazil,” said Clare High School Spanish teacher Lori Schmidt, displaying a poster with her Spanish students to explain Quinceanera.

Ashley Deeann Baker was arrested sometime Friday and her partner, a 28-year-old male from Mount Pleasant, still is sought by the Isabella County Sheriff's Department.

Fabiano structural problems to be resolved by this fall

A steam leak that displaced about 230 students from Fabiano Hall April 15 was fixed immediately, and no further problems have occurred, said Celani and Fabiano Hall Director Janelle Todd.

“It was more of an inconvenience than a real problem,” said Fabiano, Emmons and Woldt Hall Council President Brian Zerfas, a Dorr senior.

Study challenges 'freshman 15' weight issue

The idea of the “freshman 15″ may be a myth of the past.

A new study conducted at the Texas A&M International University, discovered freshman women on campus lose more weight than women living off campus.

Researcher Sukho Lee concluded students who live on campus may consume more sugar and total calories per day, but they have a higher level of physical activity compared to their off-campus counterparts.

On-off-campus places will extend hours for exam week
