Israr, who is from Afghanistan, will live that dream at CMU.

Ping-Pong comedy awkward, not funny

Friday, August 31st, 2007

“Balls of Fury” is like someone walked into a comedy club and replaced all of the comedians with accountants.

There's not a simpler way to put it: This movie is not funny.

And not just regular not funny, the way, say, “Jeopardy!” is not funny. We're talking sad, humorless shell of a film in which actors awkwardly attempt to be funny, but fail miserably to do so.

Jones' Big Debut

Friday, August 31st, 2007

When Butch Jones was introduced Jan. 5 as Central Michigan's 25th football coach, he emphasized his team would be mentally and physically tough.

Apparently he meant it.

“I foresee a lot of our games being more lax than our practices, to be honest,” said junior defensive tackle Andrew Hartline.

Chalked messages have been a long-standing college tradition.

And at CMU, it's a university-approved way for groups to get their messages out.

Professor proposes financial center

Friday, August 31st, 2007

CMU's Writing Center helps students struggling with the subtleties of rhetoric.

But the university offers nothing similar for students struggling with their checkbooks.

One CMU professor wants to change that.

Plenty of students struggle to understand the nuances of personal finance, said Finance and Law professor R.

Dr. Donald H. Matthews

Philosophy and Religion Professor

Guest column

Almost 20 years ago an African-American Ph.D. candidate from the University of Chicago Divinity School arrived on campus to teach in the Religious Studies Department at CMU. He was no longer the eager student but now he was the arbiter of knowledge and authority in classrooms whose racial and ethnic makeup were different from his own.

A technical solution

Friday, August 31st, 2007

If the voice on the other end of the Information Technology Help Desk line sounds like it has heard it all before, it is because it has.

“Anything to do with computers comes to us first,” said Mount Pleasant junior Stephen Schulz.

Schulz is one of many tech savvy undergraduates who man the phones and answer pleas for assistance from students with computer-related problems.

Innovative tools change teaching

Friday, August 31st, 2007

By now many students have used graphing calculators or Blackboard to complete assignments.

However, students may soon find themselves using newer educational developments.

Wimba, a brand new technology at Central Michigan University, operates much like a video chat room using Web cams to facilitate discussion.

Cornerback Talib has huge mission against Chippewas' passing attack

Friday, August 31st, 2007

The football team's offense largely was based on its passing attack last season.

So it's no surprise Central is concerned about the Kansas secondary, which is led by second-team All-American cornerback Aqib Talib. CMU plays the Jayhawks at 7 p.m. Saturday in Lawrence, Kan.
